About Us

The Office of the DeWitt County Sheriff is located at 101 West Washington Street in Clinton, Illinois.  Sheriff Jered Shofner employs a team of dedicated professionals to meet the demands of the office.

The Sheriff is elected by the people of the county, and commissioned by the governor.  Illinois law assigns a variety of duties to the County Sheriff.  The Sheriff is the conservator of the peace and has the responsibility to prevent crime and maintain the safety and order for the citizens. By statute, the Sheriff also is required to serve the orders of the court, maintain the security of the courthouse and courtroom, serve as “Supervisor of Safety” in the county, and a long list of other requirements.

Sheriff Jered Shofner entered public service in 1987 as a radio operator.  He spent 23 years working at the Sheriff’s Office, earning every rank from Deputy Sheriff to Chief Deputy.  His diverse law enforcement career included 10 years as an undercover officer while assigned to Illinois State Police Narcotics Task Force.   In 2010, he was elected County Sheriff.

The first term of the Sheriff Shofner’s administration has concentrated on increasing the presence of patrols in rural communities, professional development of the staff, and improving the safety of the county jail.  Sheriff Shofner credits his exceptional staff of 30 employees, with making all of these goals a reality.

Sheriff Shofner is 2011 Graduate of the National Sheriff’s Institute, and a 2008 graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command. He also holds degrees from Eastern Illinois University and Parkland Community College.
