About Us

The Office of the DeWitt County Sheriff is located at 101 West Washington Street in Clinton, Illinois.  Sheriff Mike walker employs a team of dedicated professionals to meet the demands of the office.

The Sheriff is elected by the people of the county, and commissioned by the governor.  Illinois law assigns a variety of duties to the County Sheriff.  The Sheriff is the conservator of the peace and has the responsibility to prevent crime and maintain the safety and order for the citizens. By statute, the Sheriff also is required to serve the orders of the court, maintain the security of the courthouse and courtroom, serve as “Supervisor of Safety” in the county, and a long list of other requirements. 

Sheriff Mike Walker is a lifelong resident of central Illinois, growing up in Pana, Illinois and graduating from Pana High School in 1984.  After graduating high school, Sheriff Walker earned his Associates Degree in Law Enforcement from Lakeland College.  Sheriff Walker is also a graduate of the University of Illinois Police Training Institute and Northwestern University Center for Public Safety School of Police Staff and Command.

Sheriff Walker’s Law Enforcement career began in 1986, as a Reserve Deputy sheriff  with the Christian County Sheriff’s Office.  In 1987 he began serving as an Auxiliary Police Officer with the  Pana Police Department.  In 1989 Sheriff Walker joined the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy Sheriff.  During his career with the Sheriff’s Office he has served as a Deputy Sheriff, D.A.R.E. Officer, Patrol Sergeant, Jail Administrator and Chief Deputy.  In 2018 he was elected County Sheriff.

Mike and his wife, Tonya have been married since 1992, and have two adult children Bailey and Connor.
